There is some demand for fumecupboard of large size or with special facilities such as multi-level work surfaces, side or rear access ports, or side storage cabinets.

Large ventilated enclosures may require high airflows and the full implications of the extract and corresponding air supply rates must be appreciated at the design stage.

Examples of large "fumecupboards" can be found as pilot-plant size chambers in chemical works, where "bucket" chemistry is practised, or as animal exposure chambers designed to minimise airflow within the chamber during the exposure to the challenge but to give maximal protection to the operator when gaining access to the experiment.
